How Does The My Safe Florida Home Grant Process Work?

What To Expect During The Application and Inspection Process
After your application is received, it will be reviewed by the MSFH team; the team will determine if your application meets the criteria for being covered; once you’ve been qualified as a potential awardee, the My Safe Florida Home program will send an inspector to perform a wind mitigation inspection.
Note: It may take up to three months to receive word back from the My Safe Florida Home team.
Suppose the inspector determines that your property can benefit from hurricane protection or wind mitigation work. In that case, you will receive word from My Safe Florida Home outlining what kind of coverage you will have under the grant.
What Happens After My Safe Florida Home Grant Approval?
After you’ve been approved for coverage under the My Safe Florida Home grant program, it’s time to start thinking about which hurricane protection measures (hurricane windows or accordion shutters) may be best for your home and budget.
This is a great time also to check your wind mitigation report to see which hurricane protection measures you are approved and covered for under the program. Here’s a list of things to look out for;
- Look for the uniform mitigation verification inspection form. On this form, you will find the opening protection level chart (section 7). To ensure you are covered for impact windows or accordion shutters, you must have Row N and X marked to be covered.
- Look at the additional photos section. If you have any window photos that mention they are unprotected, you will likely be covered for hurricane windows or accordion shutters.
Please call us if you have any questions about your My Safe Florida Home coverage.

How To Pick The Best Window & Shutter My Safe Florida Home Approved Contractor

When picking a My Safe Florida Home-approved contractor, you want to check for the company’s reviews, product offerings, and how many years they have been in business. The good news is that we’ve done much of the work for you. We’ve compiled a complete list of the My Safe Florida Home-approved contractors in the Palm Beach and Broward area with their company reviews and ratings added, so you can pick from the top 3 contractors without doing hours of research on your own.
There are roughly 200 companies in Palm Beach and Broward County offering Hurricane Shutters and Impact Windows, about 120 of which are My Safe Florida Home-approved contractors which will be able to provide you with hurricane protection that the MSFH grant program will cover.
Since a large majority of the most reputable contractors in the Palm Beach and Broward area are a part of the program, thankfully, you have many options. Although, out of the list of 100+ contractors, only five companies meet the criteria we recommend all our customers follow when considering hurricane shutter and window companies.
Let’s talk about how you can effectively do your research.
How to Read My Safe Florida Home Approved Contractor Reviews
Let’s talk about how to spot a good company from a great company based on their reviews. We recommend that our customers only work with companies with over 120 reviews, with an average rating of around 4.3 stars at the minimum, with approximately 4.5 stars being preferable.
Ensuring the company meets these criteria will help ensure the company you work with cares about its customer service, consistently provides high-quality products and maintains a clean work record. Almost all hurricane protection companies offer some form of warranty, but these warranties are only as good as the company that gives them. You want to avoid being stuck with poor customer service when a hurricane is on the way.
Once you’ve identified three companies that meet the minimum review criteria, search through the top positive and negative reviews. Please keep an open mind throughout the process, as it’s not uncommon for competitors to post false reviews.
Shameless self-promotion here; we have over 1,000 online reviews and an average rating of 4.6 stars. Check us out here.
How Long Has the Contractor Been in Business?
Many people don’t consider checking the company’s years in business as a metric to decide to do business with them, but it’s essential when considering hurricane protection. Much like how vital customer service is, if a company has been in business for longer than a decade, they are far more likely to be there when you need them.
Many companies offer warranties they cannot possibly hope to honor—leaving their previous customers without guarantees if their hurricane protection becomes non-functional. In our experience, over the last three decades, roughly 40% of hurricane protection companies will close within the first five years. We recommend that all people looking to get hurricane protection in South Florida work with a company that has at least been in business for 5-10 years. Preferably, customers should opt to work with companies that have been in business longer than ten years.
Another shameless self-promotion here; Assured Storm Protection has been in business for 30 years and has helped over 25,000 Floridians protect their home from hurricanes.
Make Sure The Approved Contractor Offers A Robust Product Line of Impact Windows & Accordion Shutters
Another important consideration is ensuring the contractor you choose can offer a wide range of hurricane protection products. You want a provider that can provide multiple brands of impact windows and doors, hurricane accordion shutters, and even garage doors. Even if you only want accordion shutters!
The reason is simple enough: you will receive a grant from the My Safe Florida Home program, which will be offered based on the dollar amount you contribute. We’ve seen a few circumstances where our customers have been able to upgrade to impact windows on a few openings at very low (and in some cases, no cost to them)
Of course, if you are looking for impact windows, working with a company with access to work with all six major manufacturers will give you more options and more opportunities to save through manufacturer specials.
Hey there, another shameless self-promotion here. We work with all six major hurricane window manufacturers. We even manufacture our hurricane accordion shutters so that you can skip the accordion shutter middle-man altogether, and we can pass the savings directly to you.
Get Quotes From Three Contractors
Do a bit of price shopping. After you contact a few top-rated companies:
- Have them write up a quote for you.
- Compare the quotes.
- Consider their reputations before deciding.
Don’t move forward with the first My Safe Florida-approved contractor you see.
After You’ve Signed With A MSFH Approved Contractor
It’s important to note that because this is a government grant, you will initially be responsible for paying the job in full. The government will reimburse you later after a My Safe Florida Home-approved inspector installs and inspects your new hurricane protection.
However, you can use one of our financing options, such as Synchrony Bank, Renew, which has plans ranging from zero interest over 18 months, and even some plans offering no money down.
Alternatively, many of our customers have chosen to get a new credit card offering no interest for 18 months (this option could be more credit friendly because you can keep this line of credit indefinitely.) Once you decide, it’ll be time to make a down payment.
The Top 3 Window & Shutter My Safe Florida Approved Contractors in Palm Beach and Broward
We recommend three contractors above all others on the list. These contractors are advised because they met most of the earlier-mentioned criteria.
We’ve decided on the top 3 based on a few factors.
- Their review rating, as well as the number of reviews.
- Their product offering.
- The amount of time the company has been in business.
Assured Storm Protection
Total Score: 95/100
Assured Storm Protection scored a 95 because of their largely positive reviews online and robust product line. Customers will find it much easier to find competitive rates and options with five window manufacturers and a company that manufactures their hurricane shutters.
Total Ratings: 4.75 Stars (~795 Reviews)
Google Rating: 4.6 Star (~438 reviews)
Angi’s List Reviews: 4.85 Stars (~357 Reviews)

- …and more
BnT Impact Windows and Doors
Total Score: 80/100
BnT was given a score of 80 due to its many positive reviews online. However, they do not offer accordion shutters, and their impact window line does not include ES Windows, which has by far taken over the market due to its incredible value.
Total Reviews: 4.7 (~666 reviews)
Google Rating: 4.4 Stars (~289 Reviews)
Angi’s List: 4.8 Stars (~377 Reviews)
Years In Business: 14+
Products Offered:
Impact Windows: PGT, CGI, and ECO
Dependable Shutter Service
Total Score: 72/100
Dependable Shutter Service was given a 72 score due to their largely positive reviews but failed to place higher because they do not carry a competitive line of products. With only CGI windows, it will be tough for DSS to offer competitive pricing and options.
Total Reviews: 4.85 Stars (~505 Reviews)
Google Rating: 4.9 Stars (~280 Reviews)
Angi’s List: 4.8 Stars (~377 Reviews)
Years in Business: 17+
