My Safe Florida Home Eligibility Criteria
You must meet a few essential requirements to take advantage of the My Safe Florida Home program. In our required documentation section, we’ll provide information on how to get the required documentation on these eligibility criteria below. Here’s what you need to know:
You Must Not Have Identifiable, Current, Impact-Rated Hurricane Protection
The program is intended to help Florida homeowners who do not have hurricane protection get proper protection, not to help homeowners who already have hurricane protection get upgrades. For the most part, homeowners with already-existing hurricane protection may not be eligible.
However, there are a few situations where homeowners who have existing hurricane protection may still be eligible for the My Safe Florida Homes grant program:
- Your existing hurricane protection is not labeled or identifiable as impact-rated.
- Your existing hurricane protection is not up to code.
- Your existing hurricane protection is not operable.
You Must Be Homesteaded at the Property
Your home must be your primary residence, and proof of homestead exemption must be provided.
The Insured Value of the Home Must Be Less Than $700,000
Ensure your home’s insured value is below $700,000. This criterion helps prioritize the program for those who need it most, typically low—to moderate-net-worth households. You can find this on your homeowner’s insurance policy documents.
The Home Must Be Located in a Wind-Borne Debris Region

Your home must be in a wind-borne debris region to be eligible for the My Safe Florida Home program. Using our map, you can confirm whether you are in a wind-borne region. Alternatively, you can use the state-provided map.
For reference, all of southeast and southwest Florida, including Palm Beach County, Broward County, and Miami Dade County, is included as a wind-borne debris region.
The Home Must Be Located in a Wind-Borne Debris Region
Your home must have been permitted for construction before January 1, 2008. If you need help, you can check with your local property appraiser’s office or online real estate listings, but remember that they might not be accurate.
Use of MSFH-Approved Contractors
While the My Safe Florida Home program no longer requires the use of My Safe Florida Home Approved Contractors, it’s still highly recommended to do so, since contractors who work with the program are very well informed about the program and can help you navigate challenges you may have during the process, and go through additional layers of checking to make sure the company is reputable, reliable, and provides great quality hurricane protection.
