The My Safe Florida Home Program is back and has more funding for 2025!
As Floridians brace for the 2025 hurricane season, many have their eyes on the My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) Program—a state-backed initiative designed to help residents strengthen their homes from hurricane damage. Initially, the program drew massive interest by offering grants of up to $10,000 for improvements like impact windows, hurricane shutters, and reinforced doors. Over time, however, the demand far exceeded available funds, leaving thousands stuck in limbo.
Update:
The My Safe Florida Home program has recieved an additional $280 million in funding as of July 2025! To see if you may qualify or for next steps, please visit our 2025 program information page.
Why the My Safe Florida Program Exists and How It Helps Floridians Protect Their Homes from Hurricane Damage
Florida’s volatile insurance market has forced many carriers to scale back or leave the state, partly due to the high cost of covering hurricane-related claims. In an effort to reduce overall storm damage—and thus encourage insurers to stay—the Florida government created MSFH. Here’s a quick look at how it normally works:

- Wind Mitigation Inspection: Approved homeowners receive a free inspection to identify upgrades needed to protect their home against hurricanes, such as hurricane shutters, impact windows, and impact-rated roofing.
- Grant Application & Approval: If eligible, you could receive a grant (up to $10,000) to help cover part of the cost for improvements like new windows, doors, or roofs.
- Completion & Verification: Once the upgrades are installed and properly documented, homeowners submit the paperwork to MSFH for reimbursement.
- Insurance Considerations: While the program aims primarily to enhance storm protection, most homeowners see reduced insurance premiums as a secondary benefit.
Backlogs, Closed Applications, and New Funding for My Safe Florida Home Begins August 4th, 2025

The program’s popularity led to one big problem: the money ran out in 2024. Between lengthy waitlists and a flood of applications, MSFH could no longer accept new requests for wind mitigation inspections. If you missed the earlier application window, you’re out of luck for the moment—the portal is closed to new applicants.
Funding has been approved and the program reopens on August 4th, 2025
In early 2025, Governor Ron DeSantis and other state leaders, recognizing the My Safe Florida Home program’s success and demand, and as of July 1st 2025, $200 million in additional funding for the program has been released. If you’re a low- or moderate-income homeowner without any existing hurricane protection (shutters, panels, etc.), now is the time to submit your application. The 2025 program is first-come, first-served, and funds start flowing in August 4th, 2025.
However, this doesn’t mean everyone in Florida can immediately submit a fresh application. Priority will first go to the thousands of homeowners who already applied to the MSFH program and are still waiting on inspections or final approvals. Then, priority will go to low and moderate income Florida homeowners over the age of 60.
Why So Many Floridians Signed Up for MSFH
Since its introduction, MSFH has seen tremendous demand—in part because hurricane protection upgrades can be costly. Receiving financial support from the state has been a game-changer for thousands of Floridians who otherwise might not afford robust, high-quality storm protection.

Why You May Not Want to Wait for My Safe Florida Home Before Getting Hurricane Protection
1. You Are Unlikely To Get Funding in Time for Hurricane Season
Florida’s peak hurricane activity ramps up in late summer and early fall. It typically takes weeks or months to clear the existing backlog, conduct new inspections, and disburse grants. By the time you secure funding and schedule an installation, you may be heading into the heart of hurricane season, or may even be far past peak season.
2. Installing Hurricane Shutters and Impact Windows Takes Time
High-quality hurricane protection products—like impact windows or shutters—usually need to be ordered, manufactured, and shipped before a skilled contractor can install them. This process can easily stretch over one to two months in an ideal scenario. If you add in the time it takes to re-open MSFH applications, complete a wind mitigation inspection, and process paperwork, you could be pushing well past the most critical weeks of the hurricane season.
3. The Program Has Limited Funding
With only $200 million in approved funding, the 2025 MSFH program is not as well funded as it has been in the past.
What If You Already Have a Pending Application?
If you’re among the homeowners who submitted an application before MSFH closed the portal, you may be in a better position. When the new funding arrives, you’ll likely receive priority over newcomers, which means you could get your inspection (or final approval) sooner than others. However, even then, the process won’t be instantaneous:
- You’ll have to confirm your eligibility under any updated rules.
- You must schedule and complete your improvements if you haven’t already.
- The installation backlog could grow as more residents try to get their projects done around the same time.
In other words, even being near the front of the line doesn’t guarantee your home will be storm-ready before the 2025 hurricane season hits its stride. Although, it is possible that you will be able to receive hurricane protection before the peak hurricane season begins in mid-August.
Staying Prepared & Protected in the Meantime
The reality is that hurricanes don’t wait. If your existing windows, doors, or roof are overdue for an upgrade, holding out for My Safe Florida Home program money could be a gamble. Even if you’re counting on the additional funding, you may want to:
- Schedule a professional assessment of your home’s storm vulnerabilities so you know exactly what needs to be upgraded. We offer free assessments for hurricane impact windows and accordion shutters.
- Set aside funds or explore financing options for hurricane protection. In many cases, the long-term savings on potential storm damage (and even insurance premiums) can outweigh the initial costs. We also offer extensive financing options on hurricane shutters and impact windows.

Don’t Let Mother Nature Catch You Unprepared
The My Safe Florida Home Program in 2025 stands as a valuable lifeline for many Floridians seeking financial assistance to bolster their homes against hurricanes. However, the combination of limited funds, a large backlog of applicants, and a mid-summer funding timeline means relying on MSFH for the 2025 season comes with significant uncertainty.
If your property is in critical need of hurricane-proofing, waiting for state grants may leave you vulnerable during the most active months of the year. While MSFH might eventually help reimburse some costs, the peace of mind from having robust storm protection in place before the first major storm forms is priceless.
By acting sooner rather than later, you can ensure your home—and your family—are better protected against whatever this hurricane season throws our way. And if you’ve already applied for MSFH, stay alert to announcements and be ready to move quickly once the program’s funding is unlocked. Either way, proactive preparation remains your best defense in the face of Florida’s unpredictable storms.
